Livin' the Dream

Ok, really, being in High School for anymore time than the required 4 years is NOBODY'S dream. (Unless you're the has-been football star who just can't get over those glory days... there really ARE better things than high school) But I just wanted to share some reasons why its fun to be in high school without being in high school.

When I was in high school, I guess I always tried to "live the dream"... I did the "cheerleading- ASB-went to dances-participated in everything" bit. But let's face it, I don't have the fondest memories of high school and don't really care much anymore about what happened there. This is the closest I ever got to "Livin' the Dream" and it was a year after I graduated at a high school that wasn't my own.

Wow... Isn't that quite the blast from the past?!
This is my high school sweetheart Mikey
and his little sister (who just had a baby).
Don't cry mom... its ok that we broke up!

At Mesa High School, where I teach, the varsity football players ask their favorite teachers to wear their away-jerseys to school on the Friday of a home game. I like this version of "Livin' the Dream" much better... It's when I feel appreciated for all of the emotion I put into my job.

Trey, #87, asked me to wear his jersey for their first game.
Trey has a great sense of humor.
We frequently chat on Fridays about the previous night's
"The Office" episode.

Pictured with us is one of the mini-coaches, Jason.
He's one of the smartest, nicest kids I've ever taught.
Both boys are Juniors this year.

Down the hall is one of my good friends Sarah.
It's kinda fun for both of us to be
the BELOVED math teachers on campus.
Who ever loved their math teachers, anyway?
(Besides me... I loved Mrs. Bowerman,
but I was a nerd, so I don't count!)

But the real reason I named my post "Livin' the Dream" is in dedication to my last boyfriend Greg. He would always give me a hard time about the secret crushes (or not so secret crushes) my students have on me. (Don't worry... I am a 100% appropriate teacher. You WILL NOT see me on CNN ever!) Anyway, whenever Greg and I would run into my students in public, he would just smile and laugh on the inside and think to himself "I'm just the livin' the dream!"

These pictures made me giggle- a lot! David walked by and started looking over my shoulder while I was reading this...he looked at the picture of you and #87 and said, that kid totally has a crush on Miss Spendlove :)

BTW did I tell you that David is researching the development of mathematical thinking here at Teacher's College? He's about to start working on a study that shows that 1st and 2nd graders have algebraic reasoning capacity...how's that for super nerdy?

You mean you weren't livin' the dream in high school?? Remember the tour you gave Wendy and I the first time we visited your home town? Sounded to me like you were livin' some kind of dream! ;-) just kidding...

Anyway, love the post. And FYI...I remember one of my math teachers was one of my absolute least favorite teachers ever. But I love you!

I thought my 7th grade math teacher (Mr. Sather) was a total Hottie, but I made sure I keep that knowledge under wraps.

PS-After looking at that picture of you with your friend Sarah I can totally see why you've got an entourage of high school boys oggling you. You're such a cute (math) teacher, I can hardly blame those boys.

Ahh yes, Bowermomma rules - I had her 3 of 4 years. But never a crush...

I still think it's cool that you connect with students at the high school level and give them a person to admire and want to learn from. I think you have a real gift connecting to young people. Fun way to enjoy being in HS living the dream ;)

Well of course I have a blog. And I just spent a freaking hour reading every one of your posts. It was kind of a relief that you haven't been blogging for years. That would have taken forever!

I loved seeing the picture of you and Mikey! That IS a blast from the past. I'm like you...I don't really miss high school AT ALL. We had our good times but I don't miss the drama of being a teenage girl. I still laugh to myself to think that you are somebody's HS math teacher. I'm sure you are the best looking and funniest teacher those kids will ever have!!! Really, I mean it!
